Sixty years out of Matera
Calia Italia has been making leather and fabric upholstery in Matera, in Italy's south, since 1965 — six decades of work that recently earned it recognition as a Historic Brand of National Interest, a distinction reserved for makers who have produced excellent "Made in Italy" goods for at least fifty years.
The region matters here. Calia draws on the leather-working tradition of Puglia and Matera, sourcing its hides from specialist Italian tanneries nearby. The result is upholstery with real depth of material — leather that softens and improves rather than wearing out.
Why it belongs here
Our floor has always leaned toward Italian case goods — the dining tables, the bedroom suites, the cabinetry. Upholstery is the piece that completes a room, and we wanted to add it the way we add anything: by finding a maker who shares our patience. Calia fits. The craft is honest, the materials are real, and the designs are built to be lived with.
