Made to Last

The most sustainable piece of furniture is the one that never needs to be replaced.

Our view

Longevity is the measure

Sustainability has little meaning if furniture cannot be enjoyed for a lifetime.

Where so much is made to be discarded and replaced, Italia Furniture believes sustainability begins with good design: pieces that are valued more the longer they are lived with.

01 · Design

It begins with good design

We select designs that are timeless rather than bound to trends.

Furniture should age gracefully and become part of a home's character. Without this, an investment becomes something to be replaced.

02 · Material

Materials chosen to last

Durability is determined before anything is built. Coverings, finishes and frames are selected first for how they wear.

  • Leather: 100% top-grain wherever leather is used, a durable and refined grade selected for years of wear.
  • How our leather is tanned and finished, and how the grades differ: Read Leather 101 →
  • Wood: our manufacturers use wood certified by FSC or PEFC, the two principal certification programmes for responsibly managed forests.
  • Fabric: fabric options certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and tested for harmful substances, including fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles.

03 · Workshop

Made by manufacturers who measure their impact

Water-based finishes, low-formaldehyde panels and responsible factory practices.

  • Water-based finishes and low-formaldehyde panels meeting US EPA and California CARB rules.
  • Solar panels and LED lighting at the factory.
  • Waste sorted for recovery, raw materials reused and recycled, packaging optimized.
  • Native trees and hedges planted around the site, with work done to protect the area from flooding.

04 · Made in the EU

What made in the EU means

Pieces made in the EU come from factories governed by EU law on worker safety, product safety and materials.

  • Safe workplaces: every employer must assess the risks to its workers, train and consult them on safety, provide health surveillance, and record and report accidents. Italy enforces these requirements through its national workplace-safety law (EU Directive 89/391; Italian Legislative Decree 81/2008).
  • Clean air for workers: since January 2023, worker exposure to hardwood dust has been limited to 2 mg/m³ over a working day (EU Directive 2017/2398).
  • Product safety: since December 2024, every consumer product sold in the EU, including furniture, must be safe, traceable to its manufacturer and recalled if a risk is identified (EU General Product Safety Regulation 2023/988).
  • Responsibly sourced wood: from December 2026, large companies must demonstrate that wood products sold in the EU were legally harvested and did not contribute to deforestation (EU Deforestation Regulation 2023/1115).

05 · Journey

Between the factory and your home

Packaging generates a significant amount of waste and consumes considerable resources.

Italia Furniture properly disposes of and recycles cartons, foam, film and crating, significantly reducing waste.

06 · Your Home

Cleaner air at home

Sustainability extends into the home. The adhesives, finishes and panels within a piece of furniture share the air of the room in which it is placed.

  • Verified to meet California CARB limits on formaldehyde emissions from composite wood, the same limits the US EPA applies nationwide.
  • Water-based finishes are used by all of our manufacturers.
  • Fabric options certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and made without PFAS.
  • Every piece we import from the EU is made to EU standards. Since August 2026, these limit the formaldehyde a piece of furniture may release to 0.062 mg/m³, and EU chemical-safety regulations (REACH) govern the substances used in adhesives, finishes and coverings.

07 · A Long Life

Kept, not replaced

This is where sustainability is ultimately measured. A well-made piece, properly cared for, remains in the home for a decade or longer without needing to be replaced.

Fewer pieces, kept longer: less manufactured, less shipped and less discarded.

  • Our furniture is made to be repaired, refinished and maintained affordably over the long term.

The people who make it

Most of our manufacturers are in Italy, where craftsmanship is part of the culture and attention to detail is expected as standard.

The craftspeople behind each piece bring decades of experience to every seam, joint and finish, working in facilities held to the environmental standards of the European Union and of Italy.
